Cultural understanding

(R flicking through a British picture book, trying to get the literary agent to understand that this isn't really what she is looking for):
- It's, mh, it's very, mh, I'd say, traditional.
Agent: What are you looking for then?
R: - Inventive, with an edge; do you know the current Scandinavian picture book style at all?
Agent: - You mean gothic, sinister, dark?

It’s interesting then that the foremost exponent for the dark, gothic and sinister side of children’s literature was British/Norwegian!
